When I first heard about Ultra™ materials from Challenge Sailcloth, I was skeptical. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the new technical fabrics claiming to be stronger, lighter, and more durable. However, after studying and testing what Ultra™ really is and the properties it possesses, I am convinced—this is the future material for outdoor equipment.

What is Ultra™?

Ultra™ is based on ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), a material that is incredibly strong relative to its weight. You might recognize it by other names like Dyneema® or Spectra®. Ultra™ takes this technology a step further by offering a series of woven laminates that combine lightness with remarkable durability. These fabrics are quickly becoming popular for backpacks and tents on the market.
